Bay of Pigs Invasion
The bay of pigs invasion was an unsuccessful attempt of the Cuban CIA to invade southern Cuba with the aid of the United States armed forces. Their goal was to overthrow the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. The friction between the U.S. and Castro led President Dwight D. Eisenhower cut off all foreign relations with the Cubans. on April 17th, 1961, over 1300 Cuban exiles invaded southern Cuba, armed with U.S. weapons. They landed at Bahia de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) and wanted help from the civilians to cross the island of Havana. The invasion, however, was stopped by Castro's army. When it ended, on April 19th, 90 exiles had been killed and the rest taken as prisoners.
